It is hard to believe that it is only 5 days out from race day and I am flying out tonight for Boston. I am starting to get excited for the race and feel like I can finally think about actually competing. It has been a long and lonely build up, but I am confident that I have prepared better than any marathon I have ever run.
Prior to running my qualifying race in December of 2017 I had not run a marathon since March of 2009. When I was younger I approached most of the marathons I ran, six total, in shape, but never having put together and extended training block focused solely on running my best marathon. I was usually just training without a real focus and decided to race. This time it is different I followed a very specific plan focused on this race for the past 19 weeks.
Looking over my training log give me a ton of confidence. For the 17 weeks between December 2nd and March 30th I ran 1,738 total miles for a weekly average of 103 miles. My highest mileage week 120 miles which is the 2nd most for one week that I have ever run. I also did 7 runs between 20-26 miles and numerous others of 18-19 miles. I definitely have never done anything like that before.
Reflecting on all this helps me remember how hard I have worked for this one day and excites me to get to Monday. It has been hard to be so singularly focused and to commit so much time and energy to one thing, but I have learned a lot along the way.
I can’t wait to get out there on Monday and compete alongside so many other athletes who have also been preparing so diligently over the winter to compete at their best in Boston. I have never experienced a race like Boston and don’t know what to expect.
If you want to follow my progress on Monday you can download the Boston Marathon App. My bib # is 7639 and my wave starts at 10:02 AM Eastern Time.
See you in Boston on Monday!
