Training + Life Balance

7/15-21/19 Total Mileage 71.54 miles.

This week was a great week of training and family time. No real focus just getting some solid runs in and trying to enjoy the summer we have 5 weeks left before I start work and the boys start school again.

Monday the 15th

10.68 miles, 1301ft elevation gain, 1:30:07

Today I ran up at Fort Boise and just explored around a little. It was a beautiful morning and I just tried to keep it easy the whole time. My legs felt solid but still a little tired from last Friday. Was getting excited that I had signed up for the 50k and have something to look towards in August now.

Later in the day I laid down and fell asleep for about two hours. I never nap but it felt amazing and I must have needed. After that I took Judah to the store and we bought him a new bike! In the evening we went over to Kristin Armstrong Park and he rode it on the greenbelt while Ezekiel road the scooter Rachel, Silas and I went on a walk. We spent some time throwing rocks in the river and saw a Crane up close as well as a huge beehive along the trail.

Tuesday the 16th

8 miles, 52:57, 1 mile warm up (7:33), 5 mile progressive (6:49, 6:33, 6:16, 5:54, 5:47), 2 mile cool down (7:10, 6:50)

Ran along the greenbelt heading east from Quinn’s pond. Felt pretty good today was happy overall with the workout though I wish it was easier than it was. I just ran off of feel and didn’t really have a goal pace in mind today. The Boise Greenbelt is a great place to do this kind of workout. It’s always nice to see other people out there.

Went to Roaring Springs Water park around lunch time for a few hours with the kids. It was a blast but the weather was weirdly cold and cloudy so we only stayed a few hours. There were no lines though so we got lots of water slides in! In the evening our good friends came over for a BBQ and we were able to catch up with them while the kids played.

Wednesday the 17th

8.65 miles, 1,614 ft elevation gain, 1:23:39

Put a loop together and just ran it. Ended up being a lot of climbing but it was beautiful and a lot of fun. I parked at the upper parking lot on 8th street. I ran up the Corrals trail until I hit Scott’s trail then followed that to Hulls Gulch before running that back to Red Cliffs and up to my car. This is a loop I will run again in the future and am already thinking how to link it to other trails to extend it. The Ridge to Rivers trail system really is amazing being so close to downtown Boise.

After the run I had my afternoon with Judah it was our day to spend time together and he wanted to go back to Roaring Springs. It was warming than yesterday but not too busy. It was great to spend some quality time with him! We need more one on one time.

Thursday the 18th

11.23 miles 1500ft elevation gain, 1:37:37

Took the time to drive up to Bogus Basin and run the Stack Rock Trail today. It was an awesome run and very quiet up there. Not much to say other than just a great day to be running on some single track trails through the woods alone!

We just relaxed at home this afternoon which was a nice change from being so busy!

Friday the 19th

7.13 miles 56:14

Woke up today feeling unmotivated for some reason then Judah offered to ride his bike with me on the run and we ended up having a great time just out chatting and enjoying the morning together. We just ran from home and took it really easy.

This afternoon the boys really wanted to go check out the new exhibit at the Boise Zoo so we headed there late in the afternoon and enjoyed walking around seeing all the new animals. Afterwards we had a movie night and watched Stars Wars: A New Hope. This was the first time the boys had seen it and they loved it.

Saturday the 20th

15.85 miles, 2,374 ft elevation gain, 2:08:55

Started todays run at Camelsback park and ran up to the top of Hulls Gulch before connecting with Smith’s trail then the Corrals trail before hitting Lower Hulls Gulch and taking it back to the park. I had been thinking about running this loop and finally decided to do it. I figured it was about 16 miles but wasn’t sure. Ended up being pretty close I will definitely run this more often in the future.

The rest of the day was just at home relaxing before we headed to downtown Boise in the evening to check out our friend Brad’s grand opening for his new restaurant Toasted. It was amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and tasty!

Sunday the 21st

8 miles 59:36

Just ran the canal loop from home this morning before church. Listened to a great Podcast from Training for Ultra. I have been really enjoying this podcast lately as I contemplate running longer trail races soon. After church this morning we spent some time downtown letting the kids play in the fountains at the Grove Plaza before heading home and watch the Empire Strikes Back. Nice relaxing day to end the week.
